Topnotch Gradebook Description

Topnotch Gradebook is designed to run inside a spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel. The grades for each class are maintained in separate files on your computer which also contain the entire gradebook program. This makes it very easy to transfer your gradebook from one computer to another or to switch among Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.

When you purchase a license for any edition of Topnotch Gradebook, you will be given the freedom to make as many copies of the file as you need. Probably the best way to use the gradebook is to create a new file for each class you teach. If you teach multiple classes with the same grading structure, you can even make your own template by saving a copy of the file after entering your setup information. Each individual copy of the gradebook will allow you to record grades for a group of up to 40 students. If you have more than 40 students in a class, you can easily make another copy to handle the additional students.

Two Editions

There are two editions of Topnotch Gradebook for you to choose from: the Light and the Full Editions. Both can accommodate up to 40 students per file. The main difference between the two is that the Light Edition can handle up to 25 total assignments, distributed into 8 categories, whereas the Full Edition has room for 105 assignments, distributed into 10 categories.

Which one is right for you?

The choice is fairly easy. If you never expect to have more than 25 graded assignments in a term, and if you only need 8 categories, then the Light Edition is for you! Otherwise, you should go with the Full Edition.

The Light Edition

In the Light Edition, all grades are entered on a single worksheet which can hold up to 25 grades. These 25 grades can be assigned in any way wish to any of the 8 categories you set up.

The Full Edition

The Full Edition also allows you to keep up to 25 assignment grades, distributed among 8 categories, on a single worksheet. In addition, you can create 2 more categories for managing larger groups of grades for the same students on 2 separate worksheets. One worksheet (called "BC1") holds up to 50 assignment grades, while the other ("BC2") holds up to 30. Altogether, then, the Full Edition allows you to manage up to 105 grades distributed virtually any way you wish among up to 10 categories. Finally, the Full Edition also includes the ability to record grades for 1 or 2 bonus assignments, which can allow you to add percentage points to your students' final grades.

The Demo Version

You can try out a demonstration copy of the Full Edition before you buy and use it for a period of 6 months. Just go to the Downloads section and select the version you wish to try. The demo version only allows you to enter data for 5 students, but it's enough to give you a sense of what the Full Edition has to offer. The Light Edition is essentially the same as the Full Edition, except that it lacks the BC1 and BC2 worksheets, which are designed for your "big categories," and it lacks the section for Bonus Grades (extra credit).
